Another month of Philadelphia Union soccer has come to an end and thanks to a late winner and insurance goal from MIkael Uhre off the bench the Union are back on top of both the Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield standings. 1. 🚀 Uhre leads Philadelphia Union to win over Colorado
Mikael Uhre scored a brace off the bench to lead the Philadelphia Union to a 3-1 come-from-behind win Saturday night at Subaru Park.
Uhre put the Union in front with a goal in the 89th minute and sealed all three points with another in the 95th minute. Tai Baribo's 15th of the season put the Union on level terms in the 64th minute to cancel out Rafael Navarro's 37th minute opener.
The win spoiled the homecoming of Downingtown native Zack Steffen, who did everything he could to keep his hometown team off the board with an 8-save performance.
The Union's xG on the night was 4.8 to Colorado's 1 but it wasn't until Kai Wagner whipped in a cross to the back post that Baribo was able to put in that the home fans had a goal to celebrate. The goal for Baribo came after an MVP performance in the All-Star Game on Wednesday for the Israeli international.
With the win, the Union move back into first place both in the Eastern Conference and the Supporters' Shield race with 50 points, one point clear of FC Cincinnati in both. They'll return to league play hosting Toronto FC on August 9 with a friendly slated for next Saturday against Eintracht Frankfurt at Subaru Park.
2. 🏆 West Chester United Wins National Amateur Cup
It took longer than expected thanks to an equalizer at the death of regulation but West Chester United has finally won a trophy that has eluded them in their tireless quest for hardware: the National Amateur Cup.
The Predators lifted the National Amateur Cup trophy and officially qualified for the 2026 U.S. Open Cup with a 4-3 win over RWB Aria in extra time in the final played Saturday night in Milwaukee. The Chicago club - two-time amateur cup champions - was also on the losing end of West Chester's first national title, the Werner Fricker Cup back in 2015.
Joseph McDaid broke a stalemate in the 120th minute with a goal off an assist from Dylan Lacy to deliver West Chester United's first National Amateur Cup trophy and the first for any team from Eastern Pennsylvania since Philadelphia Inter won it in back-to-back years from 1973-1974.
RWB Aria came into the match shorthanded with a pair of players and their coach serving a suspension after all were shown red cards in their 1-0 semifinal win over Say Word FC on Friday night. But the adversity of suspensions and an early goal from West Chester United by Josh Luchini did little to deter them. Víctor Mañón equalized in the 34th minute and put Aria up 2-1 just before halftime.
Out of the break, West Chester United wasted little time getting themselves back into the game with Jack Jasinski equalizing and the Predators nearly took the lead a couple minutes later when a foul was called in the box. Dylan Lacy stepped up to take the kick but it was a routine stop to the keeper's right.
Lacy redeemed himself in the 75th minute when he set up Giuliano Whitchurch for the go-ahead goal that felt like a winner but ended up being a precursor to late drama. With the game seemingly on its way to ending in West Chester's favor, Mañón completed his hat trick with practically the last kick of regulation.
The shock of being so close to celebrating a victory only to turn around and have to play two 15-minute periods after playing the previous day put West Chester in a dangerous place heading into extra time but the woodwork proved to be as much as a competitor to West Chester as they create a number of chances that ended up with woodwork being struck. The final breakthrough came just as things appeared to be heading to penalties with McDaid putting home a cross from Lacy to secure the 4-3 win.
Congratulations to West Chester United SC on winning the @USAdultSoccer Men's National Amateur Cup! 🏆
With the victory, they've punched their ticket into the 2026 @opencup! 🇺🇸
